How do I tan animal skin on my own?

In my communications class, we're reading My Side of the Mountain. And for a poject, we have to do something the dewd in the book would need/do, and I choose tanning animal hides....but, well, I have to do it the old fashioned way-like no chemicals and stuff. and the internet [google, yahoo, dogpile] is being useless. Can anyone help me out?How do I tan animal skin on my own?
There are some good websites out there with information on historical methods of tanning hides. Beware - not for the squeamish - many involve using the brains of the animal:

this is a very difficult process which i know little abot never the less i will try to help. First you must make sure you live in an area where you can acquire the hides also you should research how to skin whatever you kill as it is a dificult process. I think before you work on the preservation of the hide you should give more thought to the process necessary to acquire those hides. Also why would the character in my side of the mountain need to tan hides?
