Are black women who use skin lightening products turning their back on their colour?

One of my friends is black and has started using skin lightening cream to make her skin brighter. As a mixed race women I have never really considered using the products myself but my friend says that a lot of black women get stick for using them as other black women feel very strongly that black women should embrace their colour and its beauty, whatever shade it is. I think this is a really interesting issue and was just wondering why some black women want to lighten their skin and why other black women are offended by this. Are black women who use skin lightening products turning their back on their colour?
To each his/her own. To me it is no different than a ';white'; person tanning or someone styling or coloring there hair. If she feels she would look better, then more power to her.Are black women who use skin lightening products turning their back on their colour?
As a White (w/ dark olive skin), it is FAR different than a White person tanning. I also think that some of the most beautiful women are the one's with the pure ebony skin tone. I am definitely against skin lightening creams and they only prove the fact that the slave mentality is alive n kickin. Report Abuse

It's not only black women who do this. Arab, Asian, and Hispanic women do this too. It comes from the idea that lighter skin is prettier, more attractive, and more feminine. Having dark skin is portrayed as being ugly, scary, and very unattractive. Just looking at how the media portrayed Black women should be self explanatory. Dark skin Black women are stereotyped as aggressive and rude with a lot of attitude. While lighter skin women are seen as beautiful, polite, and friendly.
I think both tanning and lightening are not ok. But not because you are turning back on a group of people. It's because they aren't happy with the way they are. They should feel pretty the way they are. I think other black women are offended because it sends them the message that the women who lighten must not think they are pretty either. I understand wanting to fix unevenness in color, but I think it's sad when someone wants to change their color.
Only if white women are turning on theirs when they tan and fake bake to become oompa loompas.

Darker skinned black women do not get paid as well as other women, they aren't featured on tv or magazines as often, and are basically ignored on hottest 100 lists.

Ignoring skin color just think about black celebrities, how many can you name where both of their parents are black? I can only think of 5.
You have to blame the media and its sad that are own people make stupid comments but it all the result of slavery the slave owners taught the brown and the dark were thought to hate the light skin and the light skin were taught to hate the brown and the dark the light skin were taught that they were better and it is a problem today and if she look in the magazines there more dark skin models just look in vogue allure tell your friend to be proud of color and learn to love her self and that black is beautiful.
i dont think that black women are turning their back on their color

i mean white people always try to darken their color so whats the difference if a black woman wanted to lighten hers??
